Pick your trade. We’ve probably drawn one already.

Here are 42 sites from our sample book: made-up businesses, built exactly the way we’d build yours. Open one and the whole site runs right here.

Here’s how your week goes

Half an hour of your time on day one. After that, the next thing you do is read your new website. No calls to sit through, and every word is in writing.

  1. Day 1

    You answer the questions

About half an hour in your browser: what you do, where you work, your hours, services and prices. Not sure about something? Skip it and we’ll ask.

  2. Days 2 to 4

We build it. You hear nothing.

A designer draws the pages around what your trade has to prove, and a copywriter writes every word. Meanwhile the dull but important parts get done too.

  3. Days 5 and 6

    You read it first

A private preview link lands in your inbox. Tell us what to change, in writing, and it’s done the same business day.

  4. Day 7

    It goes live

We point your domain and switch it on. From that day you get 30 days of unlimited edits.

What a website costs in its first year

Three ways to get one, before the domain name. Only one of them has someone else doing the work.

Hire a web designer

$1,000 to $5,000 up front, before a month of hosting1

Build it yourself on Squarespace

$252 for twelve months of Basic, billed monthly2, plus every evening you spend building it

Have us build it

$108.88 for the build and twelve months of hosting, with email inside. Your time: about 30 minutes

That’s $143.12 less than twelve months of Squarespace Basic, and you didn’t spend a single evening building it.

The whole price, itemized

There’s no setup fee and no upgrade you need to get anything on the list. Two plans, and the only difference between them is who pays for the domain.

Basic

$8.99 a month

Everything on the receipt. Your .com is billed at cost, about $12 a year.

+ $1 build, once

100 of 100 left in October

Complete

$18.99 a month

Everything on the receipt, and the .com is included in the monthly. One bill, nothing to renew.

+ $1 build, once

Hosting at $8.99 a month is limited to the first 100 orders each month. After that, new orders that month are on Complete at $18.99 a month, with the .com included. The monthly price you order at is the price you keep for as long as your plan runs. We may change our prices for new orders, and a change never reaches a plan that is already running. The $1 build was $1,500, which is what a US agency charges for a site this size.

After launch, a change is one message away

No editor to learn and no ticket number. Send it on chat or by email in plain words, and a person here makes the change, usually the same business day. Two a month are inside Basic, as many as you send on Complete, and the first 30 days are unlimited.

  • Prices, hours, photos, a new section. Whatever the business needs this week.
  • Rather do it yourself? The dashboard editor changes a price or a photo in about a minute.
  • Nothing gets lost. A backup every night, and another right before each change.
DEVIQOA person, usually the same business day
  1. Hi! We’re closed Monday for Memorial Day. Can you put a note on the site?
  2. Sure. A banner at the top of every page, through Monday?
  3. Perfect, thank you
  4. Done, it’s live. Tell us when you want it gone.
An example of how a change request goes.

Why a dollar? Because we’d rather keep you for years than charge you once.

Most web designers make their money on the build, so the build costs thousands. We make ours on hosting, and every website needs hosting no matter who built it. So the build is a dollar, and the $8.99 a month has to earn its keep.

Year one, the way we earn it: one dollar up front, then month by month. If we stop being worth it in month three, you leave in month three.

It also puts the risk on us. If you don’t want the site before it goes live, you get your dollar back and we’ve paid a designer and a copywriter for nothing. That’s why nobody here is casual about the seven days.

Doing it yourself, hiring a designer, or this

Cheap used to mean building it yourself, and done-for-you used to mean a four-figure quote. This is the column in between.

Who this is for, and who it isn’t

A good fit if

  • You run a local business: a trade, a shop, a clinic, a studio or a restaurant
  • You want a proper website this month, not this quarter
  • You’d rather answer questions than learn a website builder
  • Up to ten pages covers what the business needs to say

Probably not a fit if

  • You need a custom web app, a member portal or hundreds of pages
  • You want to design every pixel yourself. A builder suits you better, and that’s fine
  • You need it live tomorrow. The promise is seven days

Questions people ask before they spend the dollar

Something else on your mind? Write to [email protected] and a person answers, usually the same business day.

Why only 100 a month at $8.99?

Because that’s the number we sell at that price, and we stick to it. Hosting at $8.99 a month is limited to the first 100 orders each month. After that, new orders that month are on Complete at $18.99 a month, with the .com included. The counter at the top of this page is the real count for October, and it resets on the first of each month.

The monthly price you order at is the price you keep for as long as your plan runs. We may change our prices for new orders, and a change never reaches a plan that is already running. So if you order at $8.99, $8.99 is what you pay for as long as you stay.

What’s the catch with $1?

There isn’t one hiding in the small print. Most web designers make their money on the build. We make ours on hosting, at $8.99 a month, over years. Every website needs hosting from someone, so that bill was always coming. Ours just has the mailbox, the SSL, the backups and a person who makes your changes already inside it.

It isn’t an intro rate either. The price in month one is the price in month sixty, because a plan that’s running keeps the price it was ordered at.

What exactly do I pay today?

$1 for the build plus your first month of hosting: $9.99 on Basic or $19.99 on Complete. After that it’s the monthly price, on the same card, until you cancel.

Domain included on Complete, $18.99 a month. On Basic it’s billed at cost, about $12 a year.

Is this AI, or a template with my logo on it?

Neither. A designer here draws your site around what your trade has to prove, and a copywriter writes every word from the answers you give us. That’s why it takes seven days and not seven minutes, and why the sites above don’t look like each other.

What do you need from me?

About half an hour, once. The questionnaire asks what you do, where you work, your hours, your services and your prices. Leave anything blank and we’ll come back to it.

No logo? We set your name properly in type. No photos? Send what’s on your phone, or nothing at all and we’ll find licensed pictures that suit your trade and your town.

What if I don’t like it?

You see it on a private link before anyone else, and nothing goes live until you say so. Ask for changes in writing and they’re made the same business day. If you decide against the whole thing before launch, the $1 comes back in full and you don’t have to say why.

Who owns the website and the domain?

You do. The domain is registered in your name from day one. The words, photos and pages are yours too, and you can download an export of all of it from your dashboard whenever you like.

How do I cancel?

Under billing in your dashboard, or on chat, or by email. No notice period, no exit fee, no retention call. Your site runs to the last day you’ve paid for and nothing is deleted for 30 days after that. Moving the domain? The transfer code goes out within one business day, free.

I already have a website. Can you move it?

Yes. We bring the content, the domain and your existing email across with no downtime, then rebuild the site around it.

A week from now, this could be live.

Your email, then the name of the business, then checkout. The questions about your business come right after, and they take about half an hour. If you start today, the date to circle is Friday, November 6.

  • Your $1 back any time before launch
  • No contract, no exit fee
  • Card taken by Stripe. We never see it
