Local SEO, reported on the first of every month

Three businesses fit in the map at the top of the results.
This is the work that gets you there.

You have had the cold call: number one in thirty days, guaranteed. Nobody can promise that, and anyone who does is lying to you.

What local SEO does for a small business in an American town is slower and narrower than the pitch, and worth a good deal more. Every part of it is below, in the order we do it, with how long each one takes.

The website itself is $1. What the ongoing work costs is further down the page, in full.

What nobody can promise you

SEO is the easiest thing on the internet to sell badly, because the customer can’t check the work.

So before what we do, here’s what we will never say to you. If you want the same argument with no price on the end of it, how to get your business on the first page of Google makes it at length.

What you get promised elsewhere not us

  • “Number one on Google, guaranteed”Not possible
  • “Results inside 30 days”Rarely true
  • “10,000 backlinks included”Does harm
  • “We have a contact at Google”No such person
  • “Submitted to 500 directories”Worthless
  • “Your 40-page monthly report”Padding

What all of that is worthZero

What DEVIQO puts in writing this is what you get

  • Which searches are worth winning - and which aren’t
  • Where you stand today, recorded before we touch anything
  • Every task we did last month, listed by name
  • When it isn’t working, said early
  • Pages, profile and listings stay yours if you leave
  • No contract. Stop the monthly work any month you like

First real movement, typically4 to 12 weeks

Where you appear is decided by Google, on the day, for that person, in that street. A firm guaranteeing a position is lying, or has been lied to itself. Bulk backlinks are the same trick in a different coat: only three kinds of link do a local business any good, and none of them are sold by the thousand.

Faster for a quiet trade in a small town, slower for a plumber in a city with sixty rivals. We tell you which you are at the start, not six months in.

What works

Where local SEO moves the needle

Local SEO is the half of search decided by where the person searching is standing: the map results, the “near me” searches, the blue links for a named town. Not backlinks and not tricks.

On top of a site that’s technically sound, a local business is won or lost on the three below. They’re worked every month rather than once, and almost everything filed under getting found on the blog comes back to them.

  1. 01

    Your Google Business Profile

For most local trades this is worth more than the website. Claimed, verified, right categories, real hours, service area, photographs, and the questions section answered before a stranger answers it for you.

Then kept current when your hours or prices change, and given something to say: a post every week takes ten minutes and almost nobody does it. The fields most people leave blank are set out in the free listing most trades set up wrong.

    Changing your hours and prices
  2. 02

Pages that match what is typed

“Emergency plumber Columbus” is a search. “Welcome to our website” isn’t. We write a page for each real job in each real area you cover, with the price and the proof on it, and a new one every month where the monthly work is running.

Choosing which ten searches are worth a page is the whole skill. Keyword research for people who aren’t marketers shows how we do it, without any software you have to buy.

How your pages get written and built
  3. 03

    Reviews, asked for every time

Recent reviews shift the map results more reliably than almost anything else a small business can do, and how many you need is a smaller number than people fear.

Where the monthly work is running, every finished job asks for one automatically, the day after, so it never depends on you remembering. A poor one turns up eventually for everybody: how to handle a bad review in public is worth reading before you reply to it.

Review requests sent after each invoice

A worked example

Five searches, and who wins them

A plumber covering Columbus. Same trade, same town. The only difference is whether anyone sat down and wrote the answer.

The second row is the one most businesses lose without ever noticing, because a “near me” search never names a town at all. The third they lose by choice: putting real numbers on a page feels like giving something away, and writing a services page that gets inquiries is the case against that.

Five searches a Columbus plumber’s customers type, and what a DEVIQO site answers them with compared with a typical small business site.
What someone types OursDEVIQO A typical small business site
emergency plumber columbus A page titled exactly that, with the 24-hour price A home page saying “Welcome to our website”
plumber near me Profile claimed, hours right, recent reviews An unclaimed listing with the old address
cost to fix a leaking water heater A prices page with real numbers on it “Contact us for an estimate”
plumber clintonville An area page for each area covered “We cover Central Ohio”
why is my water heater leaking An article answering it, published last month Nothing on the site at all
What Google sees A business that answered the question A brochure

The first ninety days, and every month after

What happens, when, and what you get told

Judge us against this rather than against a promise. It’s agreed and reported in writing, so you keep the record of what we said and what we then did.

  1. Technically broken things fixed Week 1
  2. Profile claimed, ten searches agreed Week 1
  3. Listings corrected, one at a time Weeks 2 to 9
  4. Pages people search for, published Weeks 2 on
  5. Reviews starting to arrive Weeks 3 on
  6. Map results begin to move Weeks 4 to 12
  • Done once, in the first week
  • Worked steadily across the weeks shown
  • Arriving on its own, job after job
  • When results usually start to move
  • A bar that fades out at the right keeps going past week 13. The scale is weeks from the day we start.

Weeks, not days. The map results shift before the ordinary blue links do, and a brand-new domain in a crowded city takes longer than both.

Nothing on this chart is a promise about a position. If you’d rather work the same order yourself, it’s written out as a plain local SEO checklist for tradespeople, free and with nothing held back.

01Week 1

Foundations and triage

We fix what is technically broken, claim or correct your Google profile, and agree the ten searches worth winning for your trade and your area. Nothing has moved yet. Nothing should have.

02Weeks 2 to 8

The work that eventually shows

Listings corrected one at a time, the pages people search for written and published, reviews starting to arrive. Movement usually appears in the map results before the ordinary blue links.

Included from day one

The technical half of SEO is already done

Every DEVIQO website ships with all of it from day one, built in for the $1 the website costs and kept current by the hosting. Today you pay $1 for the website plus your first month of hosting. After that hosting is $8.99 a month, billed on the same date each month until you cancel, and you can cancel in any month.

Elsewhere the same list arrives as a line called “SEO audit and implementation”, with a figure beside it.

The second item is the one that decides whether anyone clicks: page titles and descriptions are the part Google shows. Already have a website? Rebuilding the site you have brings the same list with it and keeps the positions you have already earned.

  • Clean, crawlable pages Google can read
  • Page titles and descriptions written by hand
  • Sitemap and robots file, submitted for you
  • Schema markup: business, hours, area
  • Images compressed and given alt text
  • Mobile-first, checked at three widths
  • Fast Core Web Vitals, measured not guessed
  • Search Console connected and watched
  • Redirects kept from your old site
  • Google Business Profile created and verified
  • Listings on Bing and Apple Maps too
  • Name, address and number identical everywhere

The website is $1. The list above is inside the hosting

Today you pay $1 for the website plus your first month of hosting. After that hosting is $8.99 a month, billed on the same date each month until you cancel, and you can cancel in any month. The same build is openly sold at $1,500, which is what a US agency charges for a small business site of this size. So at a dollar the website is bought, with the whole list above already in it.

The monthly is hosting, which any website needs from someone. It isn’t a second charge for the website. It keeps those twelve essentials current alongside the SSL, the nightly backups, a mailbox and your domain run for you. The .com is included on the Complete plan at $18.99 a month. On Basic at $8.99 a month the name is registered in your own name and run for you, and the registry’s own annual fee for it, about $12 a year, is billed separately at cost.

On an agency invoice that list has a price of its own. Here it’s inside a bill the site was always going to have.

The local SEO itself is the ongoing work beside it: listings, pages, reviews and the report every month, with a new page and a new article written each month and Google and Meta campaigns run alongside. Have it worked, stand it down, or stop altogether, in any month. No contract, no notice period.

If you haven’t had the website built yet, that’s where local SEO starts. There’s nothing for Google to rank until it exists.

Questions

Local SEO questions worth asking any firm

Ask them of us. Ask them of whoever emailed you this morning, and compare the two answers.

How support answers
Can you guarantee I will be number one?

No, and walk away from anyone who says otherwise. Results differ by who is searching, where they are standing, and what Google changed this week. What we can promise is the work: the technical build, the profile, the listings, the pages, the reviews, and a monthly report of exactly what happened.

What is local SEO, and how is it different from ordinary SEO?

Local SEO is the half of search that’s decided by where the person searching is standing. It covers the map results and the three businesses shown inside them, the “near me” searches, and the ordinary blue links for a named town. A plumber in Columbus competes with sixty plumbers rather than with the whole internet.

The levers are different too. A claimed Google Business Profile, listings that agree with one another, recent reviews and a page written for each job in each area matter far more here than the backlink chasing that ordinary SEO is famous for.

Our plain local SEO checklist for tradespeople is the same list, in the order we work it.

How long before I see anything?

Weeks, not days. Map results usually shift first, commonly four to twelve weeks in, because a corrected profile and fresh reviews register faster than anything else. That’s why asking every customer for a review is the one job we would ask you not to skip.

Ordinary results take longer, and a brand-new domain in a crowded city longer still. If nothing has moved by month three, the report says so and says why.

Is the monthly SEO work included, or is it a separate thing?

Separate.

Every technical item above was built into the website itself. Today you pay $1 for the website plus your first month of hosting. After that hosting is $8.99 a month, billed on the same date each month until you cancel, and you can cancel in any month. That hosting is the bill any website has from someone, and it keeps the technical list current at no charge.

The rest is the ongoing work: listings kept correct, new pages written, reviews chased, rivals watched, the report on the first of the month. You can have that worked through a busy season and paused again afterwards, because there’s no contract and no notice period.

SEO left alone goes stale, because everybody else keeps going.

My town is small and nobody searches for it. Is there any point?

Yes, and it’s usually easier. Fewer rivals means the map results are winnable in weeks instead of months.

The searches worth having are the job plus the bigger town up the road, plus everything typed from a phone on a street inside your service area, which never names a town at all.

We tell you which of your towns is worth a page of its own and which is only worth a mention, instead of writing twenty thin ones. Getting found in a town nobody searches for works through the arithmetic.

A competitor is above me and won’t move. What can be done?

Look at what they have that you don’t. It’s almost always one of four things:

  • More recent reviews
  • A profile filled in
  • A page written for that exact search
  • More years at the same address

Three of those four you can close, and the fourth gets easier every month you keep going.

We record where the two of you sit before we start, name which of the four it is in the monthly report, and tell you when one particular search isn’t worth what it would cost to win. What to do when a competitor outranks you is the longer version.

Can I change my own hours, prices and pages?

Yes, from any browser, in a few clicks, with nothing technical to learn: business hours, prices, service area, photographs and the words on a page.

The useful part is that a change made once goes out everywhere. The website, the Google profile, Bing and Apple Maps stay in step. Listings drifting apart is the single most common reason a local business stops ranking.

And if you’d rather not touch it, send the change to us and our team makes it for you at no extra cost. The help center covers each job in a page or two.

Someone keeps emailing me offering SEO. Should I use them?

Ask three things in writing:

  • What exactly will you do in month one, item by item?
  • Who owns the pages, the profile and the listings if I leave?
  • Will you say up front that you can’t guarantee a position?

A good firm answers all three in a paragraph. Ours are answered on this page, and who you would be dealing with is on ours too.

I work from home and cover a radius. Does that break it?

Not at all, and most trades are like this. A Google profile can hide your home address and show a service area instead - the right setting for a business that travels to the customer, and one plenty of firms get wrong. We set the radius, name the towns, and write an area page for each one worth having.
