Eight vendors’ domain terms, followed into the second year
A .com that doesn’t come back with a bill in month thirteen
The renewal notice arrives about eleven months after you last thought about the domain, and the figure on it is rarely the figure you signed up at. B12’s own footnote says the custom domain is free for the first year. Wix gives a one-year voucher, redeemable within sixty days. IONOS shows $20 a year struck through. On the $18.99 Complete plan the .com sits inside the monthly in year one and in year five alike, and on Basic at $8.99 a month the name goes on the register in your own name and the registry’s fee, about $12 a year, is billed straight through at cost.

The two years
Year one is the easy year. Year two is the one to read
The same six vendors, in the same order, across the two years an included domain lives through. The left card is what the offer promises when you sign up. The right card is what the registrar charges once that first twelve months is up.
Year one
The generous year
Year two
The year the bill returns
Here, both years read the same. The .com is included in the monthly on the Complete plan and stays included; on Basic it’s the registry’s own fee at cost, about $12 a year, in year one and every year after. There’s no promotional first year to lapse, because there was no promotion.
Every figure above was read from the vendor’s own public pricing page on September 3, 2026, in USD, and the source is printed in the row. Prices move, and a vendor can change one the day after this was written, so check the source before you rely on it. Anything we couldn’t read from a United States connection is marked not verified instead of guessed at. "Not published" above means the vendor states a year-one offer but no year-two renewal price where we could read it from a United States connection. It’s marked not verified in the table below.
The detail, sourced
Every included domain, and what it does in year two
The year-one wording is quoted from each vendor’s own page. The year-two column is the renewal price where one is published, and marked not verified where it isn’t. Ours is the first two rows, from the same price table the rest of the site reads.

Why year two costs more
Four reasons the free year is the cheap one
A free first year is a real saving, and none of this makes it a trick. It still helps to know why the second year so rarely matches the first.
01
A domain is a twelve-month thing
Registrations run a year at a time, so an offer that pays for "the first year" pays for exactly one renewal cycle. After that the clock resets and someone pays the registrar.
02
The offer covers year one only
IONOS says it on the card: "The first year is on us," with $20 a year struck beside it. ionos.com/domains/domain-names read September 3, 2026 Year two is that list price.
03
Renewal is at list, not at cost
Hostinger renews a .com at $19.99 a year. hostinger.com/domain-name-search read September 3, 2026 Ours is the registry’s own fee at cost, about $12 a year, or inside the monthly on Complete.
04
Sometimes year two is blank
Wix, B12, Squarespace, WordPress.com, UENI and SiteMonth publish a year-one offer and no year-two renewal we could read, so the real cost is unknown until you are already in.
How a domain is handled here is set out on the domains page: registered in your own name, pointed and renewed for you, and yours to move whenever you like. If you’d rather see the two plans side by side, the hosting page sets out where the .com sits in each.
Questions
What people ask next
Is the domain free here?
The .com is included on the Complete plan at $18.99 a month. On Basic at $8.99 a month the name is registered in your own name and run for you, and the registry’s own annual fee for it, about $12 a year, is billed separately at cost.
So the accurate word is "included," and only on the Complete plan. On Basic the name is yours, registered in your own name, and you pay the registry’s own fee for it at cost with nothing added. What we don’t do is call it free for a year and then renew it at a list price.
Why does a free domain only last one year everywhere else?
Because a domain is registered in twelve-month blocks, and the offer usually pays for the first block only. IONOS says it on the card: "The first year is on us," with a list price of $20 a year struck out beside it. ionos.com/domains/domain-names read September 3, 2026 The promotion covers year one; year two is the list price, and that’s the year the bill comes back.
What does the domain renew at in year two?
Where it is published, it’s a real number: IONOS lists a .com at $20 a year and Hostinger renews one at $19.99 a year. ionos.com/domains/domain-names read September 3, 2026 hostinger.com/domain-name-search read September 3, 2026 Several vendors publish no year-two price at all, so it’s marked not verified above rather than guessed. Here it’s the registry fee at cost, about $12 a year on Basic, or nothing extra on Complete.
Do I own the domain, or does the builder?
Here the domain goes on the register in your own name, not ours, so it’s yours to keep, move or point wherever you like. Ask us to release it and we do, with no fee. A domain handed to you as part of a plan is worth checking on this exact point: whose name is on the registration, and what it takes to move it if you leave.
Is the .com included on the cheaper plan too?
Domain included on Complete, $18.99 a month. On Basic it’s billed at cost, about $12 a year. The name is yours on either plan; the only difference is whether the registry fee sits inside the monthly or is billed through to you at cost. Neither plan marks the domain up.
What happens to my email and site if the domain lapses?
A lapsed domain takes the website and every mailbox on it down with it, which is why the year-two renewal matters more than the year-one offer. We renew your domain for you as part of the hosting and tell you before anything is due, so it doesn’t lapse by accident. That’s part of what the monthly is for.
Can I move a domain I was given free in year one?
Usually, once any lock-in period has passed, but the terms vary by vendor and some hold the registration in their own account until you ask. The thing to read is the renewal price and the transfer terms together, because a domain that’s cheap to keep and hard to move is still a form of lock-in. Ours is neither: your name on the register, our help to move it, no exit fee.
The offer
A .com that reads the same in year two
The website is $1, live in seven days. The .com is included in the monthly on the Complete plan at $18.99, or registered in your own name at cost on Basic. No promotional first year, and nothing that renews at a list price behind your back.
Today you pay $1 for the website plus your first month of hosting. After that hosting is $8.99 a month, billed on the same date each month until you cancel, and you can cancel in any month. The .com is included on the Complete plan at $18.99 a month. On Basic at $8.99 a month the name is registered in your own name and run for you, and the registry’s own annual fee for it, about $12 a year, is billed separately at cost.
The same build is openly sold at $1,500, which is what a US agency charges for a small business site of this size. No contract, no minimum term and no exit fee: cancel in any month from the dashboard.
